The villains recover shortly before transforming the food cart into a helicopter, before unveiling their balloon inside. Nobody is happy to see them and they throw the food at them, treating the trio to a dose of their own red hot medicine. In the confusion, Team Rocket grab Pikachu before making their presence known with their motto. Ash thinks Brock and the Pokémon are overreacting and takes a bite- resulting in a hilarious reaction where he desperately tries not to spit the food out, resulting in snot streaming down his face as his cheeks puff outward. The best gag of the sequence by far is Brock begging Squirtle to fire water in his face but Squirtle being so hot he shoots a burst of flame at Brock instead! Staryu, not having a mouth and thus not having eaten the food, is able to cool everyone down with a Water Gun. What follows is a pretty funny slapstick sequence of Brock and some of the Pokémon eating the food and almost having their mouths blown off from the heat of the spices. Ash orders some food from the cart and brings it back to everyone else- with James offering a hearty “bone appe-tight”. They’re cooking up a hot plan- literally, as they intend to spoil the party by putting incredibly hot condiments on the food. What he doesn’t realise- despite their paper-thin disguises- is that the vendors are Jessie, James and Meowth. Ash decides he’ll just invite Charizard to the next party instead.Īs the Pokémon rush off to enjoy the party, Misty and Brock discuss how they feel Ash has matured since they first met him- at which point, Ash spots a food cart and excitedly rushes over to it, looking forward to stuffing his face with glee. Ash is sure Charizard would behave- until he recalls incidents of Charizard being violent and disobedient. Brock, Misty and Ash send out all their Pokémon except one- Misty and Brock physically restrain Ash from throwing Charizard’s Poké Ball. Misty suggests they let their Pokémon out to celebrate and Ash agrees- they couldn’t have made it to the Pokémon League without them. The party begins and Brock chows down on a mouthful of food. (they clink celebratory glasses of orange juice) OAK: First, let’s salute Ash for finishing in the Top 16 at the Pokémon League and doing Pallet Town proud! Ash would be sent off on a shorter jaunt around an archipelago not seen in the video games, allowing the writers to come up with new ways to present the Pokémon viewers had become accustomed to and keeping things interesting with a hefty dose of imagination. The problem was the Pokémon anime series- arguably the best promotional tool the franchise had- had concluded its story arc with Ash finishing his journey to the Pokémon League at Indigo Plateau.īecause the source material of the original games had been tapped by the anime but the next games were still some time off completion, a different approach was required for the anime’s second season. Indeed, Pokémon from the games that would eventually become Pokémon Gold Version and Pokémon Silver Version had been teased to fans for some time at this point. A sequel to the original video games was inevitable. Pokémon was doing tremendous business, far surpassing all expectations. ![]() In late 1998, Pokémania was still in force worldwide.
